Kit Ong – Impressions of Wellington

Petone's Artspace Gallery is proud to welcome back featured artist Kit Ong following his highly successful debut exhibition last year. Since retiring from a career in architecture, Kit has devoted himself to painting almost every day, often venturing out to capture the landscapes, streetscapes, and character of the local area around him.

Originally from Malaysia, Kit has been painting in watercolours since childhood and won several art awards during his school years. He emigrated to Wellington in 1988, where he continued his architectural studies at Victoria University of Wellington. Nearly fifteen years ago, he semi-retired from architecture to dedicate more time to painting. Since then, he has beautifully combined his passions for art and architecture, creating atmospheric watercolours inspired by buildings, cityscapes, and the unique spirit of Wellington and its surrounds.

Known for their vivid colour, mood, and sense of place, Kit’s paintings have become highly regarded both in New Zealand and internationally, earning him further recognition and numerous art awards.

Kit enjoys the expressive freedom and versatility of watercolour painting and strives to capture the fleeting atmosphere, light, and memorable moments of the places and scenes that inspire him.

Alongside Kit Ong’s exhibition, visitors can explore four additional gallery spaces showcasing artwork by more than 200 local and New Zealand artists across a wide range of styles and genres. The gallery has become a popular destination for Wellington-themed art and prints, as well as an extensive range of unique New Zealand-made gifts. Also popular are the gallery’s creative experiences, including fun art classes, Wine & Watercolour evenings for adults, and school holiday art classes for young artists.
